Description: The Primary School Librarian develops, implements, and promotes the library program, creating and executing developmentally appropriate lessons that meet the needs of Fay School students in Pre-K through Grade Two. All units of study are coordinated with other team members to ensure a cohesive curriculum. This is a 20-22 hour per week position during the school year (Monday-Friday).
Qualifications: Knowledge and experience of best practice in primary school librarianship is essential. We are seeking a motivated and flexible librarian who knows children’s literature, who understands how young people learn, and who can work in a shared and cooperative environment. Candidates should be familiar with the developmental needs of 4-6 year olds as well as the current theories and practices that support a dynamic early childhood program.
Candidates should hold an ALA-accredited MLS degree; School Library Media concentration preferred. Proficiency with library automation systems. A minimum of three to five years teaching experience is required, preferably in an elementary school setting. We seek teachers who believe in differentiated and developmentally-aligned models of teaching and learning; understand the importance of cultural competency and instructional technology; and are attuned to the social and emotional growth of young students. Teacher certification is not required. Fay School seeks candidates who will reflect and enhance the racial, cultural, and gender diversity of our school; a demonstrated ability working in a diverse and inclusive community is essential.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Developing, organizing, and maintaining the Primary School library collection
- Teaching library classes in the context of the library’s mission and goals
- Organizing the library and establishing routines that support young children’s learning
- Planning lessons in collaboration with teachers that are interdisciplinary, thematic, and inquiry based
- Working collaboratively with Primary teachers in planning curricular units and attend team meetings
- Cataloging and classifying library materials
- Meeting with the Head of Primary School bi-weekly or as scheduled
