Assistant Law Librarian for Reference and Outreach, Emory University School of Law, Atlanta, GA

The Hugh F. MacMillan Law Library at Emory University School of Law is seeking an enthusiastic, creative and service-oriented professional to join our team as Assistant Law Librarian for Reference and Outreach. This is a full-time position, available immediately.

Under the general supervision of the Associate Law Librarian for Research and Electronic Services, our reference librarians provide high-quality legal and non-legal reference assistance to law library users, including students, faculty, members of the local bar, and the general public. This service includes providing extensive support for law faculty research through our faculty services program, interacting with students in an instructional role, and advising the Associate Law Librarian for Research and Electronic Services on reference department policy and strategic planning.

In addition, this position will be at the forefront of the law library’s outreach and marketing efforts. This responsibility will include promoting and being a point person for library services and programs to faculty and students, coordinating law library events and spearheading for internal and external audiences, creating relevant marketing materials, and exploring potential library social media endeavors.

Additional Responsibilities include:

  • Staffing the Service Desk – some evening and weekend hours may be required;
  • Supporting faculty scholarship by participating in the Library’s Faculty Services Program;
  • Providing classroom research instruction;
  • Working with student groups, including faculty research assistants, journals and law school graduate students, to assist with their library and legal research needs;
  • Assisting patrons in the use of legal research materials in all formats;
  • Creating and maintaining online research guides and other materials that enhance access to legal information;
  • Serving in an advisory role regarding library web site content;
  • Serving on law library and university library committees;
  • Engaging in professional development activities, scholarship and service; and
  • Performing other associated duties as required.

Qualifications

Required:

  • M.L.I.S. (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited institution and J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school. Candidates who will complete their M.L.I.S. or equivalent prior to start date will be considered;
  • Strong communications skills;
  • High comfort level with communicating to a wide range of patrons in numerous communication formats;
  • Desire to participate in professional law librarianship activities at local, regional and national levels; and
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently within a framework of assigned responsibilities, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively with others.

Preferred:

  • Experience providing library reference or other type of customer service experience;
  • Understanding of marketing concepts and best practices;
  • Demonstrable success in teaching or public speaking;
  • Knowledge or experience with emerging legal information technologies, information architecture, database creation and maintenance, web design and computer coding; and
  • Foreign language knowledge, Chinese preferred.
