TITLE: Collections Intern
REPORTS TO: Assistant Director
TERM: 6-12 hours per week, 12 weeks
STATUS: Unpaid Internship The Pettaquamscutt Historical Society was founded in 1958 to encourage the study and appreciation of the Pettaquamscutt region. Including portions of South Kingston, Narragansett, Exeter, and North Kingston, this region was defined in the 1658 purchase of land from the Narragansett peoples. Located in the Old Washington County Jail, the PHS museum and archival collections document the domestic, social, business, and cultural life in the region of the Pettaquamscutt Purchase.
POSITION PURPOSE/SUMMARY: The Collections Intern will work directly with PHS staff to help achieve these new goals by assisting in the completion an inclusive inventory of the museum’s artifact collection. He/She will assist with the inventory process by recording, photographing, and researching objects. Interns will gain insight into how a historical organization manages and maintains collections, develop skills with the PastPerfect software, and conduct object-based research.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct research o Photograph museum objects
- Give guided tours to public
- Provide support with other needed museum tasks and special programming
QUALIFICATIONS
- Detailed-orientated & research skills
- Competency with computers; experience with catalog software a plus
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written o Interest in history, museums, and preservation
- Excellent time management skills, organized, and positive outlook
- Some photography skills
