Barre History Collection Archival Interns: Job Descriptions
The Project:
The Vermont Historical Society seeks to hire one full-time, pre-professional and one part-time, paraprofessional intern for ten weeks during the summer of 2016. The interns will work to process and catalog the manuscript and archival portions of the Barre History Collection (BHC).
The collection is currently housed at the Vermont History Center in Barre. It was acquired from the Aldrich Public Library in 2014 and, along with a significant artifact collection, represents the holdings of the former Barre Historical Society. There are approximately 95 archival collections in various stages of processing that need to be completed.
The interns will work to arrange, describe, research, and catalog the BHC collections following the established practices and standards of the Vermont Historical Society library. The paraprofessional intern will process small collections, create folder inventories, write finding aids, and create box labels. The pre-professional intern will process larger collections, create finding aids for those collections, review and revise finding aids created by the paraprofessional intern, and create MARC records for all BHC collections.
VHS has a small staff so interns will be exposed to many different aspects of the workings of a state historical society. They will be required on occasion to help with larger institution wide projects and events.
