Content and Metadata Services Developer, Massachusetts Medical Society, Waltham, MA

As a member of our IT content systems team, you will work with product leads and implementation teams to meet business needs and priorities. Utilizing your XML and metadata expertise, you will focus on the lifecycle and workflow of a variety of NEJM Group XML content and publications to ensure timely publication of content to online, mobile, and print channels.  You will also develop and implement content services that create, process and deliver the New England Journal of Medicine and Journal Watch publications, and NEJM Knowledge+ adaptive learning content to editorial and customer facing web services, vendors, and partners.

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Support of XML content processing and transformation services for all NEJMGroup publications in the MarkLogic XML repository (utilizing XQuery, XSLT, and Java)
  • Development of new editorial and digital publishing workflows
  • Maintain editorial document search and discovery services
  • Support and maintenance of existing Enterprise Java-based content delivery services and development of new services (for web, mobile, and 3rd party partners)
  • Contribute to Enterprise and editorial service management, code build process and management, code development issues, and quality assurance operations.
  • Propose solutions to streamline business and editorial processes to achieve departmental and company-wide goals more effectively and efficiently.
  • Partner effectively with strategic vendors on co-development projects and integrated deployments.
  • Assist in estimating and scheduling technical work, and communicates status, problems, and resolutions on projects and assignments.

Requirements:

  • A Bachelors’ degree or equivalent and 5 or more years of related experience in educational or academic publishing or library and information science.
  • Experience creating and managing document-centric XML, a basic understanding of digital asset and content management and metadata best practices.  
  • Expertise with Java and Java related technologies, RESTful web services.
  • The ability to work collaboratively, to communicate technical concepts clearly and accurately, and a strong understanding of electronic document life-cycles are necessary.
  • Experience with digital publishing workflow and using XML technologies in publishing environments.
  • Experience or familiarity with the MarkLogic Enterprise NoSQL database is also desirable. 

Required technical skills include:

  • Structured information standards and tools – familiarity with XML, XQuery, XSLT, XPath, XML Schema, and SPARQL is desirable
  • Frameworks and Tools – JBoss, Tomcat, Spring, Hadoop, RESTful web services and APIs.
  • Programming languages and services – Expertise in Java and Java technologies. Familiarity with .NET, Perl, Python is desirable. Familiarity with AWS technologies and Jenkins or other Continuous Deloyment services is desirable.
  • Publishing and Metadata standards – general electronic publishing metadata standards, general content indexing and discovery concepts. Familiarity with NLM and JATS XML, METS, MODS, and MPEG-21 standards is desirable.
  • User Interface and design standards – (X)HTML, HTML5, CSS, JQuery, JavaScript/AJAX, nodeJS, Angular, Twig, Handlebars
  • Operating systems – Ability to work comfortably in Linux OS (Ubuntu and Debian), MacOS, and Windows
