Cartographic Assistant, Harvard Library, Cambridge, MA

Working with the Harvard Map Collection team and reporting to the Head, Geospatial Resources, the Cartographic Assistant organizes and manages collection materials as they move through the various workflows related to preservation, digitization and storage. This includes training student workers in scanning processes, developing required documentation and coordinating the transfer of materials to different departments outside of the Map Collection and Pusey Library.
The incumbent provides patron assistance at the reference desk in the Map Collection as needed (2-4 hours per week)
- Tracks the progress of paper maps through the entire digitizing workflow, ensuring that materials can always be located
- Coordinates the transfer of materials outside of the collection with all concerned parties ensuring that materials needed for a class or project remain accessible in the collection
- Deposits and retrieves scanned materials to and from the campus digital repository (DRS)
- Identifies cartographic materials suitable for inclusion in the Harvard Geospatial Library and provides images to the Geospatial Technology Assistant
- Updates the HMC Virtual Collection database of scanned maps
- Trains student workers on the workflow for scanning maps in-house in a manner appropriate for release on line and creates appropriate documentation
- Responds to patron requests on the reference desk 2-4 hours per week, and refers as needed
- Assists with transfer of materials to HD
- Collaborates on materials preparation for exhibitions, both on-line and physical
Basic Qualifications
- Attention to detail and the ability to work within a well-defined process with consistency
- Demonstrated organizational skills and the capacity for self-directed work
- Ability to communicate ideas effectively.
- High School diploma or equivalent required
- Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and a working knowledge of image formats required
- Proficiency with Microsoft Windows operating system and Windows software, especially Excel, required.
Additional Qualifications
- College degree preferred
- Previous library or related work experience preferred
- Experience with cartographic materials a plus
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to perform routine functions with a high degree of precision, accuracy, and productivity.
- Ability to effectively solve problems.
- Ability to work productively and cooperatively in a team environment, with flexibility and versatility in an evolving work situation. In addition, the ability to work independently to perform complex tasks and meet project deadlines.
- Commitment to be part of a continuous learning environment, updating skills as required to perform job duties.
Physical Demands
- Moving large map folders or books weighing up to 20 pounds will be required.
