Access Services Evening/Weekend Librarian

Northeastern University’s Snell Library has an exciting opportunity for an Access Services Evening/Weekend Librarian who enjoys working with staff and students to provide excellent library service. Snell Library’s Help and Information Desk is the nerve center of the library, and is jointly managed by the Library and Northeastern’s Information Technology Services (ITS ) Division. The Access Services Evening/Weekend Librarian supervises the library staff who work at this desk, and manages access to the Library, as well as library services, during evening/weekend hours. S/he communicates and participates equally with colleagues in ITS who share responsibility for providing services during evening/weekend hours, working together with them to develop policies and procedures consistent with the University’s high standards of excellence.

Under the direction and with the support of the Head of Access Services, the Evening/Weekend Librarian is entrusted with hiring, training, developing, and evaluating evening & weekend staff, directly supervising 2 full-time coordinators, 3-5 part-time graduate students, and 45-50 work study students. S/he is able to think strategically and articulate department goals and objectives, and has the project management skills to achieve those goals in measurable ways. S/he enjoys writing and using creativity in preparing reports.

The Evening/Weekend Librarian is curious about new and emerging technologies, and has enthusiasm for working in teams to recommend, plan and manage their implementation. S/he may have an administrative role in one or more of the following systems: Ex Libris Alma (Fulfillment configuration), Drupal (web site management), EMS (room-booking software), When to Work (scheduling software), and Gimlet (question tracking software).

The Evening/Weekend Librarian builds relationships with multiple Northeastern units and departments including Information Technology Services, Facilities Management, Events Planning, Husky Card Services, and the NU Police Department. S/he also works closely with colleagues in the Research and Instruction Dept. to share information and build bridges between the two units. As a librarian, s/he may participate in collection development as a selector for one or more subject disciplines, provide reference assistance at the Research Help Desk, and serve as a liaison to one or more academic departments, providing instruction as necessary.

The Snell Library is a busy place, and the Evening/Weekend Librarian enjoys helping an engaged, ambitious population of university students, maintaining security and modeling excellent, ethical customer service. S/he has the diplomatic skills, good judgment, and positive attitude to resolve customer service issues (including knowing when to escalate these issues appropriately) and to keep the library running smoothly during evening and weekend hours. Typical working hours are Sunday 10:00am – 6:00pm and Monday – Thursday 1:00pm – 10:00pm.

Qualifications

  • MLS from an ALA accredited program; at least two years of related experience, preferably in an academic library delivering a broad range of customer services to a diverse user population.
  • The ability to think creatively and problem solve effectively, working in a collaborative fashion with a team of colleagues. Excellent organizational, analytical, planning, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Successful experience hiring, training, and evaluating personnel.
  • Must have a strong commitment to diversity.
  • Must be innovative, self-motivated, service-oriented, and resourceful.
  • Knowledge of new and emerging information technologies, instructional and research methodologies, and trends in academic libraries, scholarly communication, and higher education.
  • Experience in system administration and/or management a strong plus.
