By preserving the company’s 183-year history of publishing such authors such as Henry David Thoreau, Willa Cather, Carl Sandburg, H.A. Rey, P.L.Travers, and David Macaulay the archives at HMH supports employee engagement through exhibits, blog posts, tours, and talks.
The archives are also open to scholars doing research in the field.
The HMH archives intern will assist the archivist with preparing the Boston office for its move in late 2016 to its new building and with making some of the archives digitally accessible.
Duties include:
- Scanning documents
- Creating database records
- Processing (rehousing, labeling, arranging) files that are no longer actively used for storage in the warehouse vault
- Creating collection guides and other finding aids
- Helping identify and assess the research value of materials in order to prioritize scanning
- Assisting with planning for archival exhibits in new location
Job Requirements
Qualifications:
- Enrolled in a graduate program in Library Science or Archives or Public History
- Experience with archival, library, or museum collection databases
- Familiarity with American and English writers of the 19th & 20th centuries
- Interest in the history of publishing or the history of education in 19th & 20th century America
- Ability to lift and move boxes of up to 30 lbs
Physical Requirements:
- Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing).
- The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
- Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
- Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings.
