Library Director, Brockton Public Library, Brockton, MA

The Brockton Public Library Board of Trustees seeks a dynamic Library Director.  Candidates must have a proven track record of leadership, adaptability and vision in overseeing a large, urban library system.

The Director is responsible for the management and operation of the city’s historic main branch library and two vibrant branch locations, a staff of more than 35 library professionals and an annual budget of $2.3 million.  The Brockton Public Library is the hub of a diverse Gateway City of more than 95,000 people, and its Director is an integral part of community life.  The Brockton Public Library circulates more than 183,000 items each year, and provides engaging civic programming for all ages, from story hours and literacy-themed activities for children to English as a Second Language classes, job search assistance, genealogy research, art exhibits and civic engagement programs.

Successful candidates will understand the role a public library plays in the 21st century and have a bevy of ideas for new programming, outreach and community engagement in multiple languages.  A Master of Library Science degree from an accredited college or university is required; as well as five years of experience as a public library director with supervision of a large staff.  A Massachusetts Library Certification is also required.

Required skills: practical expertise in staff management, personnel administration, collective bargaining, grant writing, budget management, technology, planning and innovative library practices.  An ability to communicate effectivity and to promote community relations with municipal leaders and diverse constituencies is highly desired.  Participation in regional and professional organizations is expected. Residency within in the City of Brockton is required within one year. 

Salary: $85,000+ depending on experience.
