Library Assistant, Gann Academy, Waltham, MA

Gann Academy seeks a friendly and engaging library assistant starting immediately. The library assistant position is 33 hours/week during the academic year. The ideal candidate will be able to work creatively and thoughtfully to provide excellent services for young adults.

Under the direction and supervision of the Library & Media Specialist, the Library Assistant provides circulation and reference services for the Gann community, as well as processing and shelving library materials and other duties as needed.

The library enriches the Gann community by teaching information literacy skills, supporting interest-powered learning, and creating a comfortable and nurturing atmosphere. Students can be found continuing an engaging conversation, drawing a complex concept on the whiteboard walls, finishing an essay, or eating lunch with their friends. The library serves students both academically and socially as a vibrant, student-centered space. The library seeks to offer personalized services that anticipate and respond to the needs of the Gann community.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Encourage the appropriate use of library facilities to help maintain a productive and collaborative research environment;
  • Maintain the library collection by processing acquisitions, shelving and shelf-reading, deaccessioning materials and performing inventory;
  • Perform circulation desk duties including checking collection materials in and out, placing items on reserve and answering patron account questions;
  • Work with the librarian to develop displays and assist with library programs;
  • Assist teenagers and adults in the use of print and electronic resources and the physical library space;
  • Assist patrons with equipment such as computers, printers, and photocopiers; and
  • Perform other duties and projects as needed

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Ability to work with wide range of people–students, parents, faculty, staff, donors, college representatives and community members;
  • Excellent customer service skills;
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively;
  • Excellent computer skills; and
  • B.A. Degree required; enrollment in MLIS program and experience in a school library a plus.
