Children’s Librarian, Hudson Public Library, Hudson, MA

Full/Part Time: Full Time

Duties/Description: Plans, organizes, directs and oversees the operations and programs of the Children’s Department; selects and orders children’s materials; creates and conducts programs for children; markets services and programs; conducts staff development and training; provides reference and homework assistance; schedules and covers the Children’s circulation desk; instructs library patrons in the use of the automated catalog, Internet, and on-line databases; coordinates elementary schools visits to the Library; oversees and conducts the children’s summer reading program; acts as program liaison to Hudson schools; supervises cataloging and processing of children’s materials; supervises the equivalent of 5 full time staff; assists with evaluations of Children’s room staff; submits monthly reports to the Director; performs other related library duties as required.

The Town of Hudson, population of 19,063, is an economically developed suburb located in Middlesex County approximately 45 miles west of Boston and 18 miles east of Worcester near the interchange of routes 495 and 290.  Other significant roadways traversing the Town include Routes 85 and 62, which connect to Routes 117, 20 and 27 in adjacent communities.

Requirements: ALA-accredited Masters in Library Science degree required, one year children’s services experience in a public library or two years of related experience. Knowledge of Evergreen ILS preferred. The successful candidate will possess flexibility, patience, tact, energy and creativity along with a thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of library administration, including computer applications and the use of electronic library information resources as well as the ability to master new technologies.

We are seeking someone with the ability to build relationships with children, parents and caregivers, and utilize media and social networking tools to promote reading, learning and libraries.  Other requirements include the ability to plan, create and implement successful programs, collections, services and procedures, excellent communication skills and success working in a busy, diverse environment.  It is essential that the candidate continue the Hudson Public Library’s tradition of providing an enriching, fun and welcoming environment for all library patrons.

Hours: 37.5 hour full‑time union position; Schedule includes one evening and a Saturday in rotation.

Salary: The Children’s Librarian position is a grade level 10 on the Town’s Pay Scale, with a salary range of $36,704 to $46,442 in seven steps; full benefits package.
