Library e-Science Coordinator, UMass Medical School, Worcester, MA

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Under the general direction of the Director of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine New England Region (NN/LM NER) and the Director of the Lamar Soutter Library. The Library has a subcontract from the NN/LM,NER to coordinate e-Science activities in the region. This coordinator works under that subcontract. e-Science (sometimes referred to as e-research or networked science) refers to the data-centric nature of current research practice in which large data sets are generated electronically through the use of computers and digital technologies and are shared by researchers and research teams over the internet. Librarians involved in e-Science provide services that support the management, curation, and long term preservation of data sets generated at their research institutions. The e-Science Coordinator supports librarians in the New England Region by planning and implementing programs and resources that build competencies in data librarianship, and by cultivating an e-Science Community of Interest that fosters regional collaboration.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops goals and objectives for the e-Science Program for New England Librarians in consultation with the Director of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine New England Region and the director of the Lamar Soutter Library.
  • Evaluates progress toward meeting program goals and objectives and reports on progress.
  • Develops proposed budget for the e-Science program with the Director.
  • Coordinates the following e-Science resources: the e-Science Portal for New England Librarians, the New England Collaborative Data Management Curriculum (NECDMC), and the Journal of e-Science Librarianship; the University of Massachusetts and the New England Area Librarians’ e-Science Symposium conference site.
  • Participates in regional planning and projects through service on teams, committees, task forces, and special projects as assigned.
  • Presents, e-Science resources such as the e-Science Portal for New England Librarians, the New England Collaborative Data Management Curriculum (NECDMC), and the Journal of e-Science Librarianship at regional and national meetings. .
  • Responsible for managing short and long-term communications with project collaborators, consultants, and the e-Science Community of Interest.
  • Designs and teaches curriculum, classes and workshops that cater to the information needs of the e-Science Community of Interest
  • Teaches research data management best practices at professional development workshops throughout the Region and at Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science.
  • Writes articles for the Journal of e-Science Librarianship and other professional publications.
  • Develops content and designs and presents papers and posters at professional meetings.
  • Identifies and recruits authors for the Journal of e-Science Librarianship.
  • Serves as liaison for the regional e-Science Advisory Board, the e-Science Portal Editorial Board, the Science Boot Camp Planning Committee, and the e-Science Community of Interest.
  • Maintains the database of the regional e-Science Community of Interest.
  • Perform other duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master of Library and Information Science degree from an American Library Association accredited library program
  • 3 years combined of library, information technology, informatics, and/or scientific research experience
  • Direct hands-on teaching skills
  • Knowledge of e-Science and best practices in research data management
  • Knowledge about the scientific research process
  • Prior project management experience
  • Evidence of excellent oral and written communication in teaching, publishing, networking, reporting, and outreach efforts
  • Demonstrated communication in networking and outreach effort, listening, negotiation, diplomacy, team, professional writing, planning, management, and implementation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to engage successfully in outreach and networking
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and adapt to new technology
  • Ability to re-prioritize tasks as necessary in response to the needs of patrons and colleagues
