Project Archivist, Annisquam Historical Society, Gloucester, MA

The Annisquam Historical Society of Gloucester, MA, seeks a qualified archivist for our Mass Humanities grant-funded project, “Squam: An Intimate History.” The archivist will identify, inventory, photodocument, index, and rehouse thirty-nine mostly 19th Century personal scrapbooks and family albums and will give advice on their handling, preservation, storage, and display.

The materials, made by generations of local residents, were deposited over the years in the Historical Society’s care. The earliest date from the Civil War and they include photographs, original art, advertising cards, montages of fashions and interior designs, letters, pressed flowers, diverse ephemera, and newspaper clippings that chronicle village life or that follow themes, such as Massachusetts crimes and criminals of the 19th century.

The project can begin immediately and will be conducted in the library and archives of the Cape Ann Museum (27 Pleasant St., Gloucester) and will be completed no later than June 1, 2016. The researcher will contribute a written evaluation to the final report. The grant is for $1,500, which will be paid on the basis of hours worked–between 75 and 100 hours, as needed to complete the inventory, and will be matched by volunteer hours to assist in the project.

Experience processing manuscript collections is required and experience processing scrapbooks is preferred.
