Head of Reference, Chelmsford Public Library, Chelmsford, MA

Duties/Description:

The Chelmsford Library is looking for a motivated and customer service-oriented librarian to head our Reference Department. The ideal candidate’s interests and skills will be equally balanced between working with the public as an active member of the Chelmsford community and leading the staff in professional development.

Essential duties will include working service desk shifts, collection development, managing print and online resources and local history collections, collaborating with other department heads to continually evolve the library and improve our resources and services, and above all, assisting patrons in a highly patron-centric library environment. This is a supervisory position that manages and trains the staff that works in the Reference and YA departments and trains all staff on traditional and emerging library tools and skills to help us stay current with developments in the field.

Additional duties will include contributing to print and online communication tools (including website, social media, email newsletters, and other channels), assisting with planning and promoting adult programming, participating in community and consortia committees, state and regional trainings and conferences, and other professional development opportunities.

Qualifications:

Minimum requirements are:

  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program
  • Three years professional library experience – supervisory experience preferred
  • Excellent communication skills, patience, problem solving, and the ability to work with patrons and staff with varying levels of expertise
  • Experience with integrated library systems
  • Proficiency with MS Office, social media applications, electronic mailing lists
  • Familiarity with website design (including HTML and Wordpress) and graphic design desirable
  • Strong desire to innovate and integrate library resources into the community.

Salary: $51,143 to $72,424 in ten steps
