Job Description

The Binghamton University Libraries Cataloging Services supports the Binghamton University community by providing bibliographic access and control through both metadata and traditional cataloging.  Cataloging Services is closely integrated with all other departments within the Libraries and utilizes a flexible workflow approach.

The Cataloging Librarian serves as a member of the team responsible for providing original, adjusted and copy cataloging and bibliographic control for a wide range of print and non-print materials in various formats. A strong commitment to service and patron access to information is essential.  The position reports to the Assistant Head of Cataloging, with the Director of Technical Services as second-line supervisor. 

Librarians at Binghamton University are members of the tenure track faculty and are expected to contribute significantly to the profession.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Creates original or adjusts existing catalog records for materials in a variety of Western European languages and in all bibliographic and physical formats so that they conform to national and local standards and practices 
  • Performs associated name, series, and subject authority control work as necessary to maintain database integrity
  • Resolves bibliographic problems associated with, but not limited to, books, serials and non-print materials in all formats
  • Works closely with public services staff to resolve questions and concerns regarding records in the online public catalog 
  • Compiles statistics as needed
  • Collaborates with staff and department heads across the Libraries to implement cross-functional initiatives
  • Creates metadata templates for digitized/digital collections in our repository using standardized metadata schemas, and works with subject experts, cataloging staff and/or students to create records for digitized/digital materials 
  • Participates in professional activities and committee assignments within the Libraries, on campus, and in professional associations at a level to meet faculty criteria for promotion and tenure
  • Maintains a current knowledge of national and international developments and trends in cataloging, classification and subject analysis, metadata, bibliographic and authority control, and automation of cataloging functions

The Libraries feature Information Commons facilities in three library locations offering workstations with access to online research materials, productivity software, and scanning/video editing capabilities. In addition to our electronic and networked resources, we provide other web-accessible services and discovery technologies such as Ex Libris’s Primo discovery platform and a digital preservation system (Rosetta).

REQUIREMENTS

Required:

  • Graduate degree in library science from an ALA accredited institution, received by time of appointment
  • Demonstrated ability to apply the following cataloging tools: Resource Description and Access (RDA), the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and classification (LCC), and MARC21 formats for bibliographic and authority records
  • Experience with at least one non-MARC metadata schema
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a variety of people in a diverse multicultural environment; ability to work individually as well as in groups; effective oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate clearly with others
  • Knowledge of current trends in cataloging and the willingness to work with new concepts and technologies
  • Working knowledge of one or more non-English languages 
  • Demonstrated ability to work with detail to ensure accuracy, strong computer skills
  • Evidence of professional growth, service activities and contributions to the library profession in order to meet faculty criteria for promotion and tenure

Preferred:  

  • Advanced degree, certificate or graduate coursework
  • Experience with institutional repositories
  • Advanced knowledge of metadata schemas, Dublin Core preferred
  • Experience with OCLC and/or Ex Libris products
  • Proficiency in a non-English language with German as a preference

To accomplish daily routines, the applicant should be able to lift and carry loads of books (10-20 lbs.), push heavy book trucks, bend and stretch to reach high and low shelves, and be able to spend long periods of time at a computer.
