SUMMARY:

The Archives and Liaison Librarian position reports directly to the Executive Director of the Library. The successful candidate will oversee the operations of the WSU Archives and Special Collections, and will be an active member of the library’s research, instruction, and liaison team. The position is a full-time, 12-rnonth, benefitted, faculty-librarian position within the Massachusetts State College Association (MSCA) bargaining unit. For continued employment the incumbent must be able to meet the requirements of promotion and tenure as described in the MSCA contract (http://rnscaunion.org).

The WSU Library (http://www.worcester.edu/library) is the intellectual center of campus, a place where members of the campus community converge, collaborate, learn, and discover. The recently renovated library features a variety of learning spaces, a coffee shop, and the library instruction classroom. The library is located in the Learning Resource Center along with the Honor’s Program, the Information Technology department, which offers a computer lab, the Help Desk and the Laptop Repair Depot, three academic departments, and nineteen classrooms. The library collection includes approximately 150,000 print and media items, 140,000 e-books, 57,000 electronic subscriptions, more than 130 databases, and the University Archives and Special Collections, horne to the Dennis Brutus special collection (http://www.worcester.edu/Dennis-Brutus-at-WSU).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provides leadership, guidance and strategic direction for the WSU Archives and Special Collections
  2. Carries out day-to-day archival practices (selects, accessions, processes, inventories, catalogs, evaluates, arranges, retrieves, and ensures the long-term preservation of archival collections)
  3. Assists in the development of policies and procedures governing the use of the WSU Archives and Special Collections
  4. Responds to research requests and consults with users on how best to access, use and interpret archival materials
  5. Promotes the use and understanding of the WSU Archives and Special Collections to researchers, students, alumni, university personnel, and the public
  6. Enables learning and discovery through teaching library instruction sessions, providing one-on-one assistance at the research help desk, developing library collections, and liaising with designated academic departments
  7. Actively participates within library work groups and committees including the Research, Instruction and Liaison team
  8. Participates in ongoing assessment activities
  9. Performs other duties as assigned by the Library Director

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Master of Library Science (MLS) or an equivalent Master’s degree, including the degree of Master of Library Science and Information Science (MLSIS), accredited by the American Library Association
  2. Expertise processing and working with archival collections, minimum one to three years
  3. Demonstrated understanding of archival principles of arrangement and description for
  4. cataloging and familiarity with major descriptive standards (AACR2, DACs, LCSH, MARC, EAD, etc.)
  5. Working knowledge of archival professional standards and best practices
  6. Demonstrated knowledge of current trends and issues in academic libraries, higher education, and relevant subject disciplines
  7. Demonstrated commitment to enabling learning and discovery on campus
  8. Strong interpersonal and oral skills, with the ability to work with diverse constituencies
  9. Excellent planning and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
  10. Ability to work flexibly, collaboratively, and collegially in a complex, dynamic environment
  11. Potential to meet promotion and tenure requirements

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Experience with digital archives and/or digitization projects
  2. Academic library experience
  3. Additional coursework, advanced degree(s), or certifications beyond the MLS, MLSIS, etc. degree from an ALA accredited institution, e.g., an MLS degree with a concentration in Archives or Archives Management, a Master’s degree in History, certifications from the Society of American Archivists or other related professional organizations, etc.
  4. Experience teaching classroom-based library instruction sessions and providing one-on-one research assistance
  5. Experience working as a liaison to academic departments
  6. Experience conducting assessment in a library or archives environment
