SUMMARY:

The Access Services Librarian position reports directly to the Executive Director of the Library. The successful candidate will oversee the operations of the Access Services department (circulation, interlibrary loan, and course reserves) and will be an active member of the library’s research, instruction, and liaison team. The position is a full-time, 12-month, benefitted, faculty-librarian position within the Massachusetts State College Association (MSCA) bargaining unit. The WSU Library (http://www.worcester.edu/library) is the intellectual center of campus, a place where members of the campus community converge, collaborate, learn, and discover. The recently renovated library features a variety of learning spaces, a coffee shop, and the library instruction classroom. The library is located in the Learning Resource Center along with the Honor’s Program, the Information Technology department, which offers a computer lab, the Help Desk and the Laptop Repair Depot, three academic departments, and nineteen classrooms. The library collection includes approximately 150,000 print and media items, 140,000 e-books, 57,000 electronic subscriptions, more than 130 databases, and the University Archives and Special Collections, home to the Dennis Brutus special collection (http://www. worcester.edu/Dennis-Brutus-at-WSU).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provides leadership, guidance and strategic direction for the Access Services department
  2. Administers and oversees the daily operations of the Access Services department (hires, supervises, and trains library assistants and work study students; creates work schedules and coordinates the opening and closing of the library; assists in the creation and documentation of policies and procedures; prepares and submits reports and statistics; manages process of sending overdue notices via the integrated library system; maintains library stacks; etc.)
  3. Plays a key role in implementing updated and new features and versions of the integrated library system (Voyager) and performs all functions required to administer the Circulation and Reports modules
  4. Advises and consults with library and information techllology staff to develop and deploy innovative, user-centered services and systems
  5. Manages the library website working with other librarians to create content, develop changes, and evaluate pages
  6. Maintains and updates information about access services on the library website, as well as other general library information, e.g. staff directory, and calendars of hours
  7. Enables learning and discovery through teaching library instruction sessions, providing one-onone assistance at the research help desk, developing library collections, and liaising with designated academic departments
  8. Actively participates within library work groups and committees including the Research, Instruction and Liaison team
  9. Participates in ongoing assessment activities
  10. Performs other duties as assigned by the Library Director

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Master of Library Science (MLS) or an equivalent Master’s degree, including the degree of Master of Library Science and Information Science (MLSIS), accredited by the American Library Association
  2. Expertise managing access services (circulation, interlibrary loan, and course reserves), minimum one to three years
  3. Supervisory experience that demonstrates strategic thinking, managing, motivating, and leading groups of staff
  4. Experience creating, editing, evaluating, and maintaining websites
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of current trends and issues in academic libraries, higher education, and relevant subject disciplines
  6. Demonstrated commitment to enabling learning and discovery on campus
  7. Strong interpersonal and oral skills, with the ability to work with diverse constituencies
  8. Excellent planning and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
  9. Ability to work flexibly, collaboratively, and collegially in a complex, dynamic environment
  10. Potential to meet promotion and tenure requirements

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Extensive experience managing access services (circulation, interlibrary loan, and course reserves), four or more years
  2. Academic library experience
  3. Additional coursework or advanced degree(s) beyond the Master’s degree from an ALA accredited institution
  4. Experience teaching classroom-based library instruction sessions and providing one-on-one research assistance
  5. Experience working as a liaison to academic departments
  6. Experience conducting assessment in a library environment
