Youth Services Librarian, Hampstead Public Library, Hampstead, MA

The Hampstead Public Library is currently seeking a technology-literate, savvy professional who will work on the front lines between the library, community and schools. Hampstead is a town of about 10,000 residents, which has historically shown strong support and usage of library services.  Hampstead is located in the southern tier of New Hampshire towns close to the Massachusetts state line. It is about an hour from Boston, the seacoast and the mountains.

Duties: Under the direct supervision of the Library Director, the Youth Services Librarian is responsible for the providing engaging activities and programs that help young people develop their creativity, interests and talents, promoting the habit of reading and library use, love of books and lifelong learning.

  • Build programs to link the library to community groups, schools and home schoolers.
  • Engage in outreach to all members of the community in order to improve library services.
  • Plan, publicize and carry out special programs at holidays and school/summer vacations.
  • Provide reader advisory, suggesting appropriate titles in response to parent, youth and teacher request.
  • Perform general circulation desk duties, greeting and assisting all patrons.

Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education or Masters of Library Science, including classes in children’s and young adult services. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with library experience and experience working with children and young adults, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrate the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Completion of a Master degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent combination of experience and education plus experience working directly with the young people.

Salary:  Grade 9 hourly rates: $17.93 – 26.89. Town of Hampstead covers 90% benefit cost. Exempt employee status. Hours: 40 per week, which may include 1 – 2 nights/week and Saturdays.
