Position Title: Commons Digital Media Specialist /Hours Variable based on Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.  
Department: Library  
Overview: Provide technology, web site, digital informational content and presentation products and services to the Library and its affiliate partners.  
Reports to: Commons Librarian/Head of Digital Publishing Services  
 
Essential Duties:
  1. Develop web pages and microsites; introduce and integrate new web technologies into an ever-expanding and evolving complex media-rich web presences; provide oversight and technical support (e.g., coordination, training, troubleshooting, etc.) for Library+Commons web content editors; collaborate and co-create with College Web development team to build robust and dynamic college web site; recommend and develop policies, protocols, standards, and guidelines for web content development, implementation, and management in collaboration with the Library+Commons Web Advisory Committee; facilitate communication and coordination among Library+Commons web site content editors and other College web developers to ensure consistency with College web policies, as well as quality, accuracy, and currency; coordinate development and maintenance of the Library+Commons private (Intranet/Portal/MyPC) site(s) based on Library+Commons strategic priorities, policy directions, best practices, and established goals; generate web site reports, statistics, and analyses regularly or as requested, participate in and represent the Library+Commons at professional regional, state, and national activities of various organizations related to Library+Commons web development; facilitate Library+Commons Web Advisory Committee and Library+Commons web content editor meetings; research new and emerging web technologies; bring new ideas, best practices, and creative solutions forward in order to improve upon the user experience and overall web presence; team-develop Library +Commons web apps providing user-customizable experiences.
  2. Support emerging role of Library+Commons as Digital Publisher/ePublisher of College community scholarship and creative expressions, developing complex media-rich faculty, student and staff project and publication web interfaces; work closely with Library Director, Head of Digital Publishing Services, Digital Publishing Services Coordinator, and Commons Digital Publishing Services Specialists to develop a Library+Commons Digital Publishing/ePublishing initiatives, creating a robust, flexible infrastructure that supports the creation, management, and dissemination of local digital-born scholarship in various formats and of digital surrogates from Special and Archival Collections; actively engage in regular and ongoing research into and development of evolving creation, collaboration, and publication tools, encoding methods; and develop staff skills and Digital Publishing Services/campus-wide web projects and Digital Publications/ePublications; participate in scanning and processing (OCR) of analog materials from Special and Archival Collections and other for web distribution.
  3. Provide general research, education, and related digital media service in the Library+Commons and on the web, as assigned; participate in cross-functional Library+Commons initiatives (e.g., School of business, Oral Presentation Skills Project), especially research and education projects and activities; contribute to quantitative and qualitative assessment of services through data-gathering and analysis.  

Marginal Duties:

  1. Answer phones, greet and direct visitors to appropriate areas or persons; compose and produce correspondence and reports; design and produce reports, and research data and information on the Internet; may serve as internal resource on departmental administrative questions; and coordinate internal and external attendee calendars; reserve/schedule meeting rooms and make arrangements for equipment, seating, and refreshments, when necessary. 
  2. May identify and make recommendations for additional or modified departmental systems. With approval, may design and implement new or modified system. 
  3. Perform intermediate and advanced computer functions including managing databases, creating, analyzing, integrating, and importing linked spreadsheets, creating mail, envelope and table merges, creating and editing captions, adding graphics, editing images, footnotes, endnotes, indices, tables of content, creating master documents and reports using information from several sources. 
  4. Perform all other duties as may be required. 
Education and Experience Required:
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution or equivalent education and experience in building advanced user-centered, media rich, web interfaces. Minimum of two years’ experience in design, development, and management of library or educational web sites. Demonstrated proficiency with XHTML/CSS/JavaScript and web authoring tools. Public service orientation, excellent written/oral communication skills, and effective interpersonal skills. Experience with and knowledge of LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) staff/framework, XHTML, HTLM 5, XML/XML frameworks, XSLT, ASP.NET web application framework (SharePoint 2010), Drupal, PHP, JavaScript, jQuery, SQL, Perl, and Adobe Creative Suite (CS). Experience with APIs/web services, web audio and video technologies, learning management system integration, and an understanding of information seeking behaviors in an academic setting.
