STEM Librarian, Salem State University, Salem, MA

Position Summary: Salem State University leads the Massachusetts State Universities in the percentage of undergraduates majoring in a STEM field, with a current count of nearly 900 STEM majors, and continues to experience rapid growth. The STEM Librarian is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position. The position will take a leadership role in the development of relationships between the university library and faculty in science, technology, and mathematics disciplines.  The STEM Librarian will also assume a leadership role in the promotion and support of original undergraduate research; and maintaining general librarian responsibilities including participation in strategic planning, and library instructional services, including the development of instructional materials, and print and digital collections in support of teaching and research to university students, faculty and staff.  Additionally, the STEM Librarian participates in coordinating special instruction programs, outreach initiatives in collaboration with campus-wide programs, including the First Year Experience.  The STEM Librarian will also engage in interdisciplinary initiatives, external partnerships and continued relationships on campus and with other academic institutions while strengthening its STEM and STEAM presence on the North Shore and beyond. 

Detailed Statement of Responsibilities:

  1. Serves as the subject specialist and liaison between the Library and the science, technology, and mathematics disciplines. 
  2. Responsible for all aspects of collection development in science print and electronic materials, including policy, selection, assessment and weeding.
  3. Provides individual research services for faculty and students in science, through a variety of avenues, including e-mail, telephone, online and face-to-face. 
  4. Promotes and provides library user education in support of assigned department courses, and in other disciplines as needed.
  5. Provide strong commitment to public service and to outreach in support of STEM curriculum; works closely with the STEM Faculty Fellow.
  6. Provide instructional services and promote science information literacy and core research resources in the sciences.
  7. Develops, maintains, and regularly updates instructional materials, with an emphasis on online guides and tutorials.
  8. Develops and coordinates special instructional programs in creation and collaboration with Learning Communities, the First Year Seminar, Summer Bridge Academy, and other student success initiatives on campus and in the community. 
  9. Works closely with the Digital Scholarship Team to provideleadership in helping Salem State capture and organize their intellectual assets, such as faculty publications, student dissertations, project reports, and scientific data sets.
  10. Keeps apprised of relevant trends in instructional outreach and research efforts, such as data management, data literacy and data visualization.
  11. Participates in general library instruction and information literacy initiatives, including general library orientations and tours.
  12. Contributes to the Library’s mission of promoting research and scholarship through investigating, developing, and implementing information and instructional technologies appropriate to the science curriculum.
  13. Assists in accreditation, program review, and other official assessment processes.
  14. Prepares and contributes to reports, publications, and other documents.
  15. Assists the Library in pursuing revenue-generating opportunities, including grant writing.
  16. Cultivates professional relationships with colleagues in science and technology. 
  17. Monitors scholarly publishing trends as they relate to science and technology. 
  18. Monitors e-science and data developments for scientific and technological fields.
  19. Contributes to library and college-wide educational initiatives and projects. 
  20. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Masters degree of Library Science or equivalent from an ALA accredited program.
  • Have completed significant graduate or undergraduate coursework in a core STEM field or fields OR have 3+ years experience as a STEM or science librarian
  • Proven track record teaching information literacy classes
  • Evidence of effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service orientation and skills
  • A high level of comfort with technology, awareness of technology issues, knowledge of library services assessment, including online databases, instructional equipment and media, and the web.
  • Demonstrated investment in technological skills development to advance and support digital initiatives
  • Excellent presentation skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Highly desirable qualifications include an earned graduate degree in a STEM discipline
  • Knowledge and experience using statistical, reporting, or data graphing software such as Veusz, Mathematica, MATLAB, SPSS, NVivo, SAS, Liseral, R, etc.
  • Experience with scientific writing and knowledge and understanding of what it means to write scientifically
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a consultative team environment where collaboration and cooperation are essential
  • Background/experience in environmental science
  • Enthusiasm for library public service and information literacy
  • Teaching experience
  • Library experience in an academic setting
  • Commitment to working in a multicultural environment with students of diverse backgrounds and learning styles
