Hours: Flexible: 8 hours per week during regular business hours (Monday-Friday, 8 AM – 4 PM)

The Trustees of Reservations seeks a Digital Cataloging intern for the Winter/Spring 2016 semester. The Digital Cataloging intern will join the Archives & Research Center (ARC) as we implement our digital asset management system and prepare for the launch of our online collections catalog in summer 2016. This person will work closely with the Digital Archivist to create original catalog records in our collections management software. They will encounter a range of digital file formats and help the ARC adhere to local and recognized standards. The intern will gain experience with multiple software programs, including PastPerfect and Preservica. At the end of the semester, the intern will have created original content for our online public collections catalog and played a valuable part in the implementation process of the ARC’s digital preservation initiative!

Responsibilities

  • Create original catalog records in PastPerfect, following established standards.
  • Create JPGs in Adobe Lightroom from TIFFs and DNGs; attach files to the corresponding catalog record.
  • Review collections and finding aids to identify any missing metadata.
  • Assist the Digital Archivist in preparing records for ingest into Preservica.
  • May assist with some social media projects.
  • May perform some digitization with flatbed scanners, oversize scanners, or digital camera.
  • May assist the Digital Archivist in miscellaneous other projects.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an Archives, Library Science, or Museum Studies program.
  • Completed coursework in cataloging or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with data entry.
  • Familiarity with Library of Congress authorities and subject headings.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to details.
  • Excellent communication and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently; ability to take direction; willingness to ask questions.
  • Interest in digital accessibility and preservation
  • Interest in Massachusetts history and culture preferred.
  • This position requires the ability to sit for extended periods of time.
