Call for Nominations: 2016 Eliza Gleason Book Award

The American Library Association Library History Round Table (LHRT) Eliza Atkins Gleason Book Award Committee is seeking nominations from members, authors, and publishers for this award.

The Eliza Atkins Gleason Award is named for Eliza Gleason (1909-2009) who was the first African American to receive her Ph.D. in library science which she earned from the   University of Chicago. Her highly acclaimed book, The Southern Negro and the Public Library, (Chicago, IL., University of Chicago Press, 1941) traced the history of library services to African Americans. The award is presented by LHRT every third year to recognize the best book written in English in the field of library history, including the history of libraries, librarianship, and information science.

Books bearing a date of publication from the previous three years, (i.e., between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2015) are eligible for nomination. Bibliographies and edited collections will not be considered. Entries are judged on quality of scholarship, clarity of style, depth of research, and ability to place research findings in a broad social, cultural, and political context. Before submitting a nomination, please contact the chair to see if the book has already been nominated.  Letter of Nominations are due on January 15, 2016 and should be sent along with 5 sample copies for distribution to the Committee to:
