Work Schedule 
40 hours per week; one year contract with second year contract possible. 

Basic Function 
Participate in carrying out the objectives of the Libraries’ Reference and Instructional Services Department. Serve as subject librarian to university departments as assigned. Reports to designated supervisor. 

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities 
Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

  • Serve as subject librarian to assigned departments, providing this clientele with direct user assistance, instructional services, support for collection development, and formal and informal communication about the Libraries’ resources and services
  • Provide user-centered reference services through reference desk duty, chat service, e-mail reference, and consultation by appointment
  • Undertake functions that support service to users, including management of assigned sections of the reference collection, development and maintenance of online guides, and instructional content (in print and online)
  • Participate as a member of the Reference or Instructional Services team to help insure maximum effectiveness of the Libraries’ public services program
  • Participate in the provision of basic orientation and instructional sessions, such as tours, workshops, etc.
  • Assist in planning and running library-related events, including welcome events, guest speakers, receptions, and celebrations of student success
  • Participate in user experience assessment and evaluation related to library instruction, resources, and services
  • Advise and assist on matters pertaining to the policies and services of the Reference and Instructional Services Department
  • Maintain a thorough understanding and awareness of library systems, policies, and procedures
  • Maintain a collegial and constructive environment based upon open communication and the fostering of good working relationships among all staff members
  • Perform related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications 
Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program. Two years of customer service experience. 

Preferred Qualifications: 
Public services experience in an academic library. Classroom and online teaching experience. Subject or liaison librarian experience. Collection development experience. Experience in the use of various learning and/or development technologies, including HTML, video and audio editing software, graphic design software, Blackboard, Drupal, and Adobe Captivate. Project management experience. 

Knowledge Of:

  • Broad range of print and electronic resources, including databases and internet resources
  • Current issues and trends in academic librarianship

Skill In:

  • Verbal and written communications and interpersonal skills
  • Personal computer applications, including proficiency in database applications and Microsoft Office Suite, including Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word

Ability To:

  • Apply flexibility in performing job duties
  • Demonstrate professional initiative

Additional Information 
To provide a leadership role in the continued development of the physical and virtual Kent State University libraries environments in order to enhance user experiences. Participate in carrying out the objectives of the libraries reference and instructional services department.
