Children’s Librarian/Library Associate, Newark Public Library, Newark, NJ

The Newark Public Library is accepting applications for a Children’s Librarian at our Van Buren Branch in the Ironbound section of Newark. We are seeking a kind, creative, and enthusiastic person who loves to work with children. The Van Buren Branch is one of the busiest in the system and serves a diverse clientele. The children’s librarian will report to the Van Buren Branch Manager and will be responsible for reference, outreach, programming, and collection development.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Providing excellent customer service
  • Answering reference questions of varying difficulty and explaining the use and availability of reference sources in all appropriate formats
  • Supporting children with homework assignments
  • Assisting and/or instructing children and their families in the effective use of electronic resources for finding information
  • Assisting children to select books to read for pleasure
  • Planning and facilitating library programs for children
  • Conducting storytimes, crafts programs, and other activities
  • Hosting teen programs (such as art workshops) or other activities
  • Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with community organizations, school, and the public
  • Planning and providing outreach activities to schools and community organizations
  • Selecting books and other library materials for collections and maintaining those collections
  • Managing special projects and performing other work as required
  • Acting as second in charge of the branch
  • Supervising clerical staff and volunteers, as needed
  • Preparing clear, accurate, and informative narrative and statistical reports

REQUIREMENTS: Current MLS students will be considered for the job at the Library Associate title. For applicants in the Librarian title: A Master’s degree in Library or Information Sciences in a library program accredited by the American Library Association and a New Jersey Professional Librarian’s Certificate are required. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal communication skills and a commitment to exemplary public service and customer satisfaction. Experience working with children or teens is highly desirable. Familiarity with children’s literature is an asset. Bilingual English/Spanish and or English/Portuguese candidates are encouraged to apply. This position requires New Jersey residency: N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70).

HOURS AND SALARY: This is a full time 35 hour per week position. It includes one evening per week and every other Saturday. Minimum salary at the Children’s Librarian title is $51,207. Minimum salary at the Library Associate title is $39,979.57.
