POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Berkshire Athenaeum, Pittsfield’s Public Library, is seeking a well organized and energetic library leader who interacts well with people. Patience, diplomacy and a sense of humor, as well as a visionary and innovative approach to library service, and the willingness to actively involve the library in community affairs are requisites. The Library Director, who answers to a fifteen-member board of trustees, is responsible for all activities of the Athenaeum. Decision-making and problem-solving requiring the interpretation of library policy and the exercise of independent judgment are involved, and/or in-depth knowledge, education, training, and ability in advanced library procedures.
REQUIREMENTS: A masters degree in library science from an A.L.A. accredited library school, with a minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional library experience, including management and supervisory experience, which demonstrates considerable knowledge in the principles and practices of general administration and supervision, and extensive knowledge of the methods, policies, practices, principles, and procedures of professional library work. Additionally, it is preferred that the new library director be a team-builder with human resource experience in a union environment; an effective, articulate advocate for city library services; able to advance library goals with creative use of limited resources; have successfully worked with a board of directors, municipal officials, and support organizations; be an accomplished fund raiser familiar with budget creation and tracking; and be fluent with library and office technology.
HOURS AVAILABLE: This thirty‑five hour full‑time position is available July 5, 2016.
SALARY: The Library Director is a grade level M-7 on the City’s Management Pay Scale, with a salary range of $64,022 to $72,437 in six steps. Starting salary dependent upon experience.
