Library Assistant, Langley Adams Library, Groveland, MA

Hours Worked: Part-Time up to 18.5 hours/week

Salary Range: $10.00 – $11.20/hr Date: November 3, 2015

 

General Responsibility

Under the direction of the Library Director, the Library Assistant participates in daily library activities, provides exceptional customer service to patrons, and assists staff with programs at the Langley Adams Library.

Supervision Received:

Works under the general supervision of the Library Director.

 

Essential Functions

  • Provides reader’s advisory service for patrons of all ages;
  • Assists patrons in selection of appropriate reading material;
  • Assists in identifying sources of outside funding, such as grants;
  • Keeps up to date with new trends in public services and library practices;
  • Participates in professional meetings to strengthen skills, interact with fellow professionals and to contribute to the profession;
  • Creates original cataloguing of library materials, as well as maintaining all bibliographic records;
  • Assists the Youth Services librarian and Adult Services coordinator with programs;
  • Processes incoming and outgoing interlibrary loan materials;
  • Participates in the daily activities of the library, including circulation, reference and technical services;
  • Performs other related duties as requested by the Director.

Must have an aptitude for working with people; Good communication with customers, other staff members, parents, teachers and children of all ages, both verbal and written and organizational skills; ability to exercise judgment; Ability to manage multiple tasks in a detailed and accurate manner; A team player, able to make contributions to overall library operations; Able to work independently as well as with others and under supervision to follow through with decisions in support of all library initiatives and programs; Must be highly self-motivated, creative, and flexible with the ability to prioritize tasks. Expected to have a professional appearance; have regular and punctual attendance; and possess a cheerful demeanor.

Work Location: Langley Adams Library

This position will be located in the Langley Adams Library. Work is conducted under normal library settings. Hours of work are during normal hours of operation and do include nights and weekends.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands:

Occasional lifting and/or moving up to 40 pounds. Noise level is generally quiet. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk short to moderate distances, talk, listen, hear, and use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch. The working conditions & physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Qualifications:

  • Prior public library experience preferred;
  • Must have knowledge of software programs including word processing and internet applications;
  • Experience with Evergreen preferred.
