Archives Assistant, MIT, Cambridge, MA

Part-time, 10-15 hours per week, Monday-Friday, 9-4 (mornings preferred), $14 per hour.
The MIT Institute Archives and Special Collections houses one of the premier collections on the history of science and technology in the United States. The Archives Assistant will work under the direction of the Archivist for Reference Outreach and Instruction to support reference, access and outreach activities.

Tasks may vary, but will include:

  • Managing receipt and return of collections stored off-site 
  • Compiling reference statistics 
  • Supporting reference, access, and outreach activities 
  • Conduct research and draft responses to reference questions 
  • Conduct research on specific topics or collections
  • Photocopy or scan for researchers or preservation, and embed metadata
  • Work at reference desk or serve as a backup to the reference desk
  • Other tasks critical to supporting reference services and disseminating information about the collections.

Ability to work independently and with a team important. Accuracy and an eye for detail very important. Must be able to lift record carton size boxes (up to 40 lbs.). Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, Notepad, Aleph, FileMakerPro, Adobe applications, and Archivists Toolkit helpful but not required.
