Reports to: Director, Global Programs
Weekly Hours: 20-25 hours/week
Organization Overview:
The Open Learning Exchange, Inc. (OLE) [ole.org] is a small social benefit organization (501c3) committed to working with educational innovators and their governments in the developing world to transform their villages and cities, and ultimately their entire nation, into powerful learning communities. We emphasize team-based coaching, open-source educational content and frequent sharing of information using a low cost digital library network that works off the Internet with locally-generated power. This approach is especially effective working with remote and marginalized communities, schools, and health clinics with limited resources. Our goal is to enable the members of these communities to transform learning into an active, engaging, and sustainable process that is relevant to the specific and evolving needs of everyone in their community. Currently, OLE is providing strategic advice and technical assistance to its emerging nation-based OLE Centers in Nepal, Rwanda, Ghana, Mexico, Kenya, Jordan, and others under development.
Position Overview:
Our organization is seeking a dedicated and passionate Digital Library Curator Intern to curate and expand our digital library, the BeLL (Basic e-Learning Library). This individual will coordinate library resource collection, maintenance, and software quality assurance efforts. This position is ideal for an undergraduate or graduate student interested in library sciences, digital preservation, international education, and literacy programs. This individual will collaborate with OLE Community Learning Coaches in developing countries to find open-source educational content that is aligned with the interests of the community’s learners and the curriculum standards of that country.
We ask that our Interns commit to a minimum schedule of 20 hours/week with a minimum 3-month contract. This position is ideal for individuals looking for semester-long internships, with an opportunity to extend beyond the initial contract period. Telecommuting is possible, but two days per week must be spent in our conveniently located office in Kendall Square, Cambridge, MA. Preference will be given to a candidate who can commit at least 4 months to OLE. Please note that this position is unpaid, but it will provide diverse experiences in the workplace.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Identify open-learning resources for OLE’s digital library that are aligned with requests from program leaders
- Collect, review, and transfer open-learning resources to the OLE digital library
- Assist in digital library maintenance
- Assist in software quality assurance efforts
Supervision Received: The Digital Library Curator Intern receives direct supervision from the Director of Global Programs.
Supervision Exercised: None.
Required Qualifications and Skills:
- Skilled in informational organization and metadata management
- Familiarity with Classification Web and Library of Congress Subject Headings
- Familiarity with Open Access, Open Source or Public Domain educational resources
- Commitment to OLE’s mission
- Passion for digital library curation
- Detail-oriented and exceptionally organized
- Able to self-direct, prioritize, and take initiative
- Have a sense of humor and enjoy working as a part of a small, collaborative team
Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
- Proficiency in Arabic, Somali, Swahili, or other bilingual proficiency
- Previous experience in an international or non-profit setting
