Part-time Children’s/Youth Services Assistant, Hubbard Memorial Library, Ludlow, MA

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Children’s/Youth Services Librarian, this employee would perform clerical, reference, computer and programming duties, and act as a general assistant to Children’s/Youth Services Librarian. This employee would work closely with the public, and deal almost exclusively with children, their parents or caregivers, and teens in a busy and friendly Youth Room. 

Duties

Staff the Youth Room desk on Tuesdays from 2:30-8:00pm, Thursdays from 9:00am – 1:30pm, Fridays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and occasionally other times when Youth Services staff are unavailable; answer reference questions and provide reader’s advisory services; provide help with public computer use; lead storytimes, craft programs, parties, Minecraft clubs, Teen Anime club and other clubs, and other programs and activities for children and young adults; supervise young adult volunteers; assist with processing new materials for the Youth Room collection; shelve books when needed and periodically shelf-read the collection; help plan and execute the Summer Reading Program; assist with grant writing for the Children’s Department; maintain neatness and organization of the Youth Room; act as a general assistant to the Children’s/Youth Services Librarian.

Qualifications

Ability to work comfortably with children and young adults; ability to create and implement children’s and/or young adults’ activities with regard to developmental levels; ability to work well with patrons of diverse ages and ethnicities; ability to supervise volunteers; familiarity with and ability to use computer library catalogs, the internet, Google Docs, Microsoft word processing programs, and online programs of interest to children and teens; cheerful, patient, friendly manner in working with the public; ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with others; dependability and flexibility with regard to hours.

Required Experience

Experience working with children and young adults in a professional setting, understanding of children’s and young adults’ developmental issues, familiarity with children’s and young adults’ literature and interests, good customer service skills, ability to work independently and without direct supervision, High School Diploma, able to work listed hours. Library experience and some college preferred.

Salary

Starting pay is $20.84 per hour.
