Intern Position Title: Resource Librarian Trainee

Hours per week: 10-15

Background Information: The Eleanor and Maxwell Blum Patient and Family Resource Center

The Blum Resource Center, located on the first floor of the Yawkey Center for Cancer Care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, along with its satellite resource rooms, provides patients and family members with a comfortable environment to learn more about disease treatment and management. The center is staffed by nurses, volunteers, and medical educators who help answer patients/families’ questions and help with needs and inquires.

Internal Job Description: The student will be assigned various projects from the Program Coordinator of the Blum Resource Center and the Program Manager of Patient Education.

Duties will include:

  1. Research and prioritize up-to-date cancer books and resources based on patient/family need
  2. Manage circulation, cataloging, and new patrons in Library World
  3. Organize disease-specific/topic-specific holdings into subject, reference and special collections in accordance with standard classification schemes and local needs
  4. Assist and instruct patients, families, volunteers and staff in finding and using scholarly information available through only academic journal databases

Technical Skills/Knowledge Preferred:

  • Understanding of library organizational tools (i.e. Library World database)
  • Proficient Microsoft skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

Non-Technical Skills/Knowledge Preferred:

  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work well with people, interpersonal skills
  • Comfortable working in a patient-facing environment, assisting patients and families with resource needs
  • Independently-driven

University Degree Preferred:
Master’s Degree Candidate
