Manager of Research and Knowledge Services, Harvard Kennedy School, Cambridge, MA

Reporting to the Director of Library & Knowledge Services (LKS) and in support of the mission of the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS), the Manager of Research and Knowledge Services leads the delivery of research, instruction, and knowledge services at LKS. This position shares collections and content development activities with the Director as well and actively participates in HKS and Harvard Library committees, working groups, and initiatives.

Position responsibilities:

  • Leads the delivery of research, instruction, and faculty services at LKS.
  • Manages and mentors 3 research services librarians.
  • Works with Director of LKS to build and facilitate access to critical collections and content, increasingly digital and inter-disciplinary in scope, to advance research, teaching, and knowledge creation in key HKS policy domains.
  • Partners with Director of LKS and Chief Information Officer (CIO) to define and strengthen knowledge services at HKS.
  • Assumes an active role in extending the global reach of HKS research and ideas by managing the lifecycle of HKS-generated scholarship.
  • Builds strong relationships with HKS faculty, department heads, Harvard Library colleagues, and others.
  • Works with Director of LKS to refine vision and plan for renovation of library space.
  • Represents LKS on Harvard Library committees, working groups, and councils.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

Minimum 7 years library experience, preferably in higher education. Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent advanced degree.

  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and partner with faculty, HKS department heads, and library managers across Harvard.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of current research methods and information sources in the Social Sciences.
  • Experience in information literacy instructional methods.
  • Knowledge of the scholarly research environment including trends in scholarly communications, dissemination and preservation of scholarship, electronic publishing, and information technology.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member in a rapidly changing and highly diverse academic community.
  • Strong customer service orientation with experience in the delivery of user services in an academic environment.
