Executive Director, Norman Williams Public Library, Woodstock, VT

The Norman Williams Public Library has an opening for the position of executive director. The library is a privately and municipally-funded institution occupying an historic building on the Village Green in Woodstock, Vermont. The library seeks an enthusiastic and creative individual to build and oversee our collections while continuing to enhance the library’s presence in the community.

The executive director is the chief executive officer of the library and works with a 15-member board of trustees to provide strategic, visionary and inspirational leadership. The director’s responsibilities include recommending, designing, directing, supervising and evaluating an active program of information services, educational opportunities and cultural activities for the citizens of Woodstock and surrounding towns.

The executive director oversees an annual operating budget of approximately $500,000 generated from the Town of Woodstock, donations, and endowment. The print collection has 55,000 volumes as well as access to interlibrary loan and ebooks. Last year (fiscal year 14-15) 45,000 items circulated, ILL requests increased 25% and circulation of ebooks and audio books nearly doubled. Volunteers contributed 2,700 hours. During the past year programs were held with more than 8,000 attendees.

The executive director is responsible for managing all day to day operations and representing the library in the community.

The Community:

Woodstock is a charming New England town of 3,200 with a strong sense of community. The population is highly literate and culturally active. Each summer the town hosts a literary festival, Bookstock and musical events are held throughout the year. Also located in Woodstock is Marsh- Billings- Rockefeller National Historical Park, Vermont‘s only national park. There are excellent public and private schools in the area including Dartmouth College.

The Executive Director:

  • Supervises the library staff and maintains a collaborative team environment
  • Recruits and selects library personnel and volunteers as well as administers personnel policies and procedures, including training, development, schedulingand evaluation
  • Develops print and non-print collections, including selection, organization, maintenance, preservation, withdrawal and disposal of materials in cooperation with staff
  • Develops short-term and long-range goals and plans to further the librarymission and operating policies in order to meet present and future community needs
  • Maintains knowledge of new developments in the library profession, including technological advances, through professional development opportunities
  • Works with the board treasurer to prepare and present an annual library budget proposal for approval
  • Oversees expenditmes from the official operating budget
  • Works closely with the development committee to raise necessary funds
  • Prepares regular narrative and statistical reports for the board of trustees and others as designated
  • Assists in preparing meeting agendas and materials and participates in meetingof the board of trustees
  • Represents the library to the community at large

Qualifications:

A Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA certified program is strongly preferred. A successful candidate demonstrates thorough knowledge of the principles of library organization and administration. Excellence in oral and written communications is essential.

At least three (3) years in a supervisory capacity of a public library major department or as a director of a public library is required.

A combination of education and experience demonstrating the ability to meet successfully the requirements of the position may also be considered.
