Part-time Library Assistant, Minot-Sleeper Library, Bristol, NH

The Minot-Sleeper Library seeks a personable and motivated individual, who is knowledgeable or has interest in learning the organization and functions of a public library. The assistant will perform a variety of duties, including: helping patrons at the circulation desk, answering general reference questions, providing support to the interlibrary loan librarian, as well as the children’s librarian, and assisting the director with clerical work as needed. A service-oriented attitude and ability to work with all ages is a must. This position is 15 hours per week; a flexible schedule is required.

Essential job functions:

  • Assists patrons at the circulation desk by creating new accounts, checking materials in and out, answering general reference questions, and responding to inquiries via telephone and email
  • Places holds for patrons and assists the interlibrary loan librarian as needed
  • Helps patrons locate library materials and assists with the use of library equipment
  • Contributes to staff meetings and planning
  • Assists staff with preparing and hosting programs at the library
  • Performs clerical duties as needed

Requirements:

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn classification systems used to organize library materials
  • Ability to professionally assist patrons in retrieving resources available in the library and online
  • Ability to respond to a variety of situations resourcefully and with courtesy
  • Willingness to learn practices and processes that relate to daily library operations
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work as part of a team, as well as independently

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a public library
  • Knowledge of current library technologies
  • Knowledge of popular children’s, young adult, and adult literature
  • Interest in growing professionally in the library science field
