Library Associate: Children’s/Youth Services, Holmes Public Library, Halifax, MA

The Library Associate/Youth Services manages all aspects of Children’s and Young Adults’ library services including weekly, summer reading and special programming, materials selection, grant writing and grant management; Designs, organizes and conducts programs for children and young adults; Provides reference and readers’ advisory services for children and parents;  assists with circulation procedures and adult reference.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Responsible for managing all aspects of Children’s and Young Adult library services including programming, book selection, reference, space planning, grant writing, and grant management: assists with circulation procedures and adult reference; attends workshops as needed

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Manages all aspects of Children’s and Young Adults’ library services including four weekly storytimes, summer reading and special programming such as book clubs ( for both youth and teens), holiday parties, and thematic storytimes. (e.g. Scary Stories) and special book-related programming (e.g. Percy Jackson, Hunger Games) materials selection, grant writing and grant management; designs, organizes and conducts programs for children and young adults; selects print and non-print materials for parenting, children’s and young adults’  collections; keeps abreast of trends in literature, programs and technology.

OTHER REQUIRED RESPONSIBILITIES: Organizes the Children’s and YA areas to provide an attractive and functional space for children, young adults, and parents; provides reference and readers’ advisory services for children and parents; assists with circulation procedures and adult reference; writes and manages grants; attends workshops as needed; performs other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: BA/BS required; MLS preferred; Experience working with children and knowledge of children’s literature required; strong public service and organizational skills; familiarity with automated library systems, public PCs, Web 2.0, social media, and the Internet required. Public library experience preferred. Good judgment, organizational skills, and the ability to work with the public are essential.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Some scheduling flexibility is required, but a regular schedule of hours with occasional exceptions is possible. Must include one evening a week and Saturdays. Employee should be able to work in library/office environment that is open to the general public; operate telephone and computer; and do light lifting, bending, and reaching.
