Head of Youth Services Librarian, Westfield Athenaeum, Westfield, MA

Westfield Athenaeum is seeking a Head of Youth Services Librarian, who will be responsible for coordination and administration of all programming, activities and materials, birth through teen. This work requires the understanding of contemporary library services and children’s literature and resources, as well as the ability to build effective working relationships within the library, schools, and community. In addition, demonstrated expertise in early literacy, youth development and customer service to families is highly desirable.

This is a Union position working 37 hours a week.

The Best Candidate Will Have:

The ability to work well with people of all ages. Knowledge of professional library principles, methods, materials and administrative practices. Working knowledge of children’s literature, including but not limited to, online searching, Internet, non-print resources, etc. Familiarity with automated library systems. Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates and volunteers. Ability to perform and supervise reader’s advisory, bibliographic and other professional library services. Ability to establish priorities, develop long range plans, including staffing needs, for the implementation of new services, programs or solutions to problems. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

A Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited school is required. At least three years’ experience working in Children’s Services preferred. Some supervisory experience necessary. Experience requirement may be adjusted.
