Cataloging Assistant, Boston Athenæum, Boston, MA

Founded in 1807, the Boston Athenæum is one of the oldest and most distinguished independent libraries and cultural institutions in the United States. The mission of the Boston Athenæum is to serve its members, the broader community, and scholars throughout the world by preserving and augmenting its collections of books and art, by providing library services and cultural programs, and by preserving and enhancing the unique atmosphere of its landmark building.

The Cataloging Assistant performs copy cataloging using OCLC and the Voyager integrated library system and supporting tasks necessary for smooth functioning of the Cataloging Department.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

I. Provide access to the Athenæum’s circulating and reference materials

Supporting Actions:

  • Perform copy cataloging and limited original cataloging for new acquisitions using the OCLC database and the library’s Voyager library system
  • Perform authority work including creation and editing of authority records for NACO in OCLC

Outcomes/Results:
By performing the above tasks the individual performs a crucial role in supporting the Athenæum’s mission by “serving its members, the broader community, and scholars throughout the world” by providing access via our online catalog and international resources such as OCLC’s WorldCat. Participation in NACO authority work enhances the Athenæum’s stature in the library sphere. The authority records produced provide for consistency of access points in the library’s catalog and in OCLC’s WorldCat

II. Perform other activities as needed that fall within the scope of responsibility and requirements of the position

Supporting Actions:

  • Provide access to and supervise the use and handling special collections
  • Process monographic bindery shipments
  • Train and supervise interns

Outcomes/Results:

Supervising the use of special collections for researchers gives the monitor a broader perspective on the library’s collections and serves the mission of the Athenæum by “serving its members, the broader community, and scholars throughout the world.” Binding paperbacks and rebinding broken hardcover books preserves these materials for future generations of members and researchers. Participation in training results in consistent approaches to cataloging and fosters departmental unity.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Two- to four-year college degree preferable
  • Previous library experience preferable
  • Good computer skills
  • Careful attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to prioritize tasks
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds

POSITION AUTHORITY:

Decisions the Position has the authority to Make:

  • Priorities and best practices pertaining to cataloging of circulating materials in consultation with department head, as appropriate

Decisions that depend on the position’s advice:

  • Workflow decisions and methodology for training interns
