Founded in 1807, the Boston Athenæum is one of the oldest and most distinguished independent libraries and cultural institutions in the United States. The mission of the Boston Athenæum is to serve its members, the broader community, and scholars throughout the world by preserving and augmenting its collections of books and art, by providing library services and cultural programs, and by preserving and enhancing the unique atmosphere of its landmark building.
The Boston Athenӕum seeks an Intern needed to work approximately 15 hours in the Cataloging Department. This intern will report to the Chief Rare Materials Catalog Librarian. Compensation is $13 per hour with no benefits, and the position is classified as temporary.
The intern will resolve problems generated by the Library’s conversion from a card catalog to an automated system, and the barcoding of the circulating book collection. The intern will use the library’s two classification systems, the Library’s online library system (Voyager), and OCLC
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Edit cataloging records to ensure that the catalog accurately reflects the library’s holdings and help to resolve conflicts.
- Retrieve books from the shelves for titles represented in Voyager by brief records.
- Search OCLC for bibliographic records for these titles and replacing the Voyager records with those from OCLC, book shifting, shelving, and end-processing.
- Other duties as assigned.
Candidates should be detail oriented, organized, flexible, and able to work independently and have basic cataloging skills. Must be able to lift forty pounds.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be enrolled in library science graduate program.
Position expected to begin in mid-late September 2015.
