Internships, The American Academy of the History of Dentistry, Brookline, MA

The American Academy of the History of Dentistry (AAHD) is the country’s foremost organization for the preservation, education, appreciation and interpretation of the history of the dental profession. We are based in Brookline, MA, in Coolidge Corner.

The AAHD is the publisher of the Journal of the History of Dentistry (JHD), the only serial academic publication dedicated exclusively to the history of dentistry. Published continuously since 1953, the JHD is indexed by PubMed; however, the content is not licensed by any academic publishing clearinghouse (such as Elsevier, Ebsco, or JSTOR). The AAHD retains the sole ownership of the contents, and controls access to the back issues. Articles from our back issues are routinely cited in the literature, and this archive remains sought-after by researchers and scholars.

Our dues-paying membership is a mixture of historians, dentists, librarians, archivists, museum curators, and private collectors. The AAHD provides services to its membership, to independent researchers and scholars, and to the libraries of dental and medical schools worldwide. We also help researchers in fields not strictly associated with history, dentistry or medicine, such as forensics/forensic anthropology; paleoanthropology; sociology and folklore. Services include: personalized research assistance; interpretation of historical items and images; and access to the archives of the Journal of the History of Dentistry.

CURRENT PROJECTS:

Maintaining and Improving our Web Site: Our web site serves as the primary content management system by which we make our holdings accessible, searchable and relevant to our audience. We are currently exploring the possibility of migrating from an old version of Drupal CMS to a new site based on WordPress. We are in the early stages and input is needed into this process.

Multimedia Cataloging and Digitizing: We need to properly catalog a broad swath of materials in many different media. Materials must be photographed, scanned, described and indexed with appropriate metadata. These holdings include: dental instruments; images; books; articles; pamphlets; advertising ephemera; teaching materials; and much more.

Improving Digital Access to the JHD Archives: Our back-issues were scanned and subjected to OCR 15 years ago. However, the OCR was insufficient and error-riddled. We would like to apply improved OCR technology; correct errors in our archival materials, both technical and factual; provide thorough metadata; index articles by author, topic, keyword, etc.; and cross-reference articles with their citations.
