Reference Librarian, Part-time, Children’s Department, Needham Free Public Library

POSITION:

PSA+ Part-Time Compensation Schedule, 19 hours per week including some weekend hours

SALARY:

$22.44 per hour; no benefits

DUTIES:

The Needham Free Public Library is seeking an energetic and qualified individual to fill the position of Part-Time Children’s Reference Librarian. This position reports directly to the Children’s Supervisor with a variety of duties including but not limited to answering general and specific reference questions, informing patrons about the the collection, the library catalog, databases, and suggesting titles while also assisting with reader’s advisory services.

Additionally, some coordinating and presenting of children’s programs is encouraged but not required.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a sincere interest in children and libraries, an ability to work the public which has wide ranging needs in a tactful and courteous manner; ability to perform under pressure, provide excellent communication, customer service, and instructional abilities; exhibit a familiarity with automated library systems, ability to adapt to new technologies as required. The position requires a commitment to service excellence, the ability to work well with others in a team; and the prowess to remain flexible and positive in a time of continuing change. Candidates should have experience with the delivery of a variety of story time formats and craft activities. Weekly work schedule may vary based on performer and craft program calendar. Position requires a Master’s Degree in Library Science or a currently enrolled MLS candidate.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARDS:

Standing, walking, use of computer keyboards requiring eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity, lifting of books and other library materials, moving a fully loaded book cart, assisting public in an open public area subject to temperature variations.
