Systems Librarian, University of Bridgeport, Bridgeport, CT

The Systems Librarian investigates, understands, and improves library systems as part of a team under the direction of the University Librarian and acts as a liaison between the electronic resources/systems and the library. This candidate will work with the other librarians, a paraprofessional system expert and a system administrator in the I.T. Department and will be an advanced administrative user of the Ex Libris suite of products including Primo, Primo Central, Metalib, SFX, EZ Proxy and Voyager or another I.L.S. as well as approximately 85 research databases and a dspace Institutional Repository.

This Systems Librarian will back up the paraprofessional system expert, the I.T. systems administrator and the Digital Content Librarian and will be able to perform the tasks assigned those positions as necessary including maintaining and updating the link resolver and Primo Discovery tool, updating the Primo user interface and the web pages contained therein, mobile device functionality, system upgrades and maintenance, and dspace repository maintenance. This Librarian will be responsible for teaching information literacy once or twice a year and will work at the reference desk every week of the Fall and Spring Semesters.  This librarian will also serve as a subject liaison to one computer related program on campus with responsibility for some collection development. 

Responsibilities:

Acts as the Liaison between the individual electronic products and the library customizing features for optimal functionality, communicating system information, providing training, reviewing and then setting options, and improving overall use of the systems 

  • Creates, Schedules, and runs reports 
  • Posts Statistics and log data to shared space online
  • Customizes Electronic resources & I.L.S.
  • Links tables in Microsoft Access
  • Runs and Troubleshoots Access queries as necessary 
  • Runs Large Scale Batch Functions and Exporting or Importing Holdings within Voyager, etc.
  • Performs Maintenance and Control of data within Voyager, etc.
  • Training of Systems or Electronic Resources 
  • Communication of Systems Information 
  • Assist with the process of renewing and managing electronic resources, upgrades, maintenance of    systems, etc. 
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications required:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science or Service
  • Ability to learn new technologies quickly and independently
  • SQL
  • 2+ years of experience as an advanced user of an I.L.S. including experience with administrative functions
  • Understanding of ILS functions like Circulation and interactivity with other systems
  • Sophisticated Experience and Knowledge of Microsoft Access including the ability to Link Tables and Troubleshoot Queries
  • Understanding of Open URL, Link Resolvers, and Discovery Systems

Qualifications preferred:

  • CSS and HTML
  • Experience setting up library applications such as link resolvers or discovery systems
  • Web scripting
  • JAVA and Perl
  • Windows Server Experience 
  • Experience working with content management systems, learning management systems, or institutional repositories
  • Knowledge of Web Development Interfaces 

Abilities:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as the ability to work effectively with Deans, faculty, administrators, students and external constituents
  • Ability to multitask with excellent organizational skills
  • Skilled in developing and meeting  timetables for multiple projects
  • Ability to work both independently and on a team
