Development Officer, East Carolina University, Greenville, NC

The Development Officer is responsible for the cultivation and solicitation of annual, major and planned gifts for Joyner Library and for the stewardship of donors.

Responsibilities include:

  • Establish a broad multi-year fundraising program through relationships with individuals, foundations, and corporations to secure private support for the mission and strategic priorities of Joyner Library.
  • Serve as a frontline fundraiser, building relationships with alumni, faculty, and other donors, through personal visits (approximately 100 annually) and written and oral communications.
  • Manage an extensive portfolio of major and planned gift prospects by identifying, implementing and evaluating appropriate cultivation and solicitation activities.
  • Help plan, coordinate, and/or participate in special events to recognize and entertain donors and prospects
  • Provide support to the Joyner Library Advancement Council
  • Articulate reporting needs; work with Advancement Services to develop appropriate reports for volunteers and administrative staff; serve as liaison to Advancement Services for all report requests from Joyner Library

The Development Officer will be expected to:

  • Identify, assess, analyze and conceive appropriate strategies for approaching prospects and making the vitally important selection of the appropriate donor interest match with focus areas within the Library
  • Work collaboratively with the East Carolina University Corporate and Foundation Relations
  • Develop and execute long- and short-term strategies to cultivate, solicit, close, and steward major gifts and annual giving
  • Collaborate with other gift officers in order to increase Joyner Library’s visibility across the entire ECU donor base
  • Travel extensively to identify and qualify prospects and conduct prospect and donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, often in conjunction with the Director of the Library
  • Attend University and Library-sponsored functions and events to make contact with prospects and donors
  • Work with the Database Administrator to help ensure prospect data accuracy
  • Work with Gift Records officers to help ensure accurate gift recording, pledge reminder and acknowledgement processes
  • The Development Officer reports directly to the Director of the Library.

Required: The Development Officer will be a fundraising professional who knows and understands the culture, nature, and purpose of development/advancement activities as they apply to the university environment and possess at a minimum: Bachelor’s degree; three years of experience conducting successful solicitations for annual, leadership, or major gifts or other pertinent/transferable relevant experience; excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated competence in delivering presentations to individuals or groups; ability to interact positively with a wide range of individuals and position levels; ability to plan, organize, implement, oversee, and coordinate multiple tasks and meet deadlines; integrity, sincerity, team-orientation, and the drive for success; willingness to approach roles and tasks with a commitment to the mission and values of East Carolina University.

Preferred:  Master’s degree; background in annual giving; at least five years progressively responsible and successful fundraising experience in an academic environment with a comprehensive development program; experience fundraising for significant capital projects; demonstrated understanding of the mission and role of an academic research library.
