The Haverford College Libraries seek a creative, collaborative, and enthusiastic Science Librarian to join a supportive, service-oriented team.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintain overall responsibility for planning, developing, managing, and evaluating the facilities, services, and resources of two departmental science libraries. Working with other staff in the Libraries, creates and maintains a strong, varied, responsive, and changing program of services to faculty and students in the areas of Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Psychology, and related concentrations. The Science Librarian contributes to the Libraries’ instructional programs, and collaborates with colleagues at the Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore College libraries in a wide variety of collection development, information access, and service functions. Reports to the Librarian of the College.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
- Develops services, maintains facilities, and performs or supervises all staff functions in the College’s two science libraries: The Gilbert F. White Science Library, located in the Koshland Integrated Natural Sciences Center, which serves the fields of biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics, and psychology, and the astronomy library, located in the Observatory.
- Develops and manages collections in all science disciplines and formats; stays current of developments in the sciences generally, and maintains a strong presence in the College’s science community; builds and maintains close relations with faculty and students in order to meet their teaching, research, and study needs; coordinates collection development programs and other services with the libraries of Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore Colleges.
- In collaboration with other staff on campus and at Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore Colleges, provides a full range of reference and instructional services to the campus community.
- Contributes to the Libraries’ mission of promoting research and scholarship through investigating, developing, and implementing information and instructional technologies appropriate to the science curriculum.
- Works with the Digital Scholarship Team to provide support to faculty and students in the sciences.
- Participates in Libraries’ strategic planning and team-based projects. Brings a strong collaborative approach to work at Haverford and to that of the Tri-College Libraries Consortium.
- Trains, schedules, and supervises 16 -18 student assistants during the academic year.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- MLS from an ALA-accredited institution.
- Two years of experience providing science research and instruction services in an academic or research-oriented library.
- Experience using collection development tools and techniques to build, maintain, and assess library collections.
- Demonstrated ability to conceive, design, and implement policy and program initiatives.
- Strong customer-service orientation.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and students.
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Undergraduate or advanced degree in one or more of the academic areas served by this position.
- Supervisory experience.
- Experience managing branch library services.
- Experience crafting and supporting the output of data management plans.
- Experience advising faculty and students on issues related to scholarly communications such as copyright, open access, and licensing.
