Head Librarian, Applewild School, Fitchburg, MA

Head Librarian / Information Literacy Specialist is responsible for all aspects of programming, collection management, and administration for the Applewild libraries.

RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:

  • Promotes information literacy skills and proper use of all varieties of information according to the nine ALA Information Literacy Standards
  • Promotes the use of standard researching skills from grades 3 through 9
  • Evaluates and makes accessible reputable resources for use by the community
  • Collaborates with faculty to incorporate research skills into their units of study and to design curriculum units using library and internet resources
  • Assists and instructs all members of the community in accessing library resources
  • Helps to promote a strong reading culture in the community
  • Develops curriculum development for library classes K – 5
  • Updates and revises summer reading lists for grades 2-9 in conjunction with English Department Chair
  • Reviews and documents library/information literacy curriculum
  • Develops and maintains the collection to support overall curriculum
  • Arranges for inter-library loan items to support the curriculum
  • Conducts annual inventory and weeding of the collections
  • Recruits and supervises numerous parent volunteers
  • Develops and maintains procedures and policies for library usage
  • Manages circulation and cataloging activities

DELEGATED RESPONSIBILITIES: The Head of School may delegate other duties to the Librarian as needed, including general coverage duties similar to those of other Applewild faculty and involvement on committees.

REQUIRED SKILLS, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE:

  • MLIS degree or certification by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a Professional Librarian
  • 2-5 years professional experience, preferably in a school library
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated skill in information technology as it applies to library science
  • Effective communication skills, both written and oral
  • Demonstrated skill in coordinating resources with curricula
  • Demonstrated familiarity with current “best practices” in education
  • Demonstrated skills in working effectively and collaboratively as a team player
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS: Librarian will work with any member of the faculty or administration, any student, and a large number of parent volunteers.
