Taxonomy and Metadata Librarian, National Fire Protection Association, Quincy, MA

The primary role of the Taxonomist and Metadata Librarian is to support NFPA’s mission as an information and knowledge organization through the creation and management of our metadata structure and, in liaison with content creators, implement a fully interoperable taxonomy in our systems and products.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Develop, evaluate, and implement taxonomy for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist in training of content creators and other departments in the use of controlled vocabulary, search process, and other functions.
  • Provide consultation services to NFPA staff on metadata creation, taxonomy structure, governance and implementation for NFPA staff in support of digital initiatives.
  • Support the library and information management functions of the association as directed.
  • Describe materials using standard metadata schema with attention to accuracy and appropriate level of detail.

 Job Requirements

  • Graduate degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited institution and/or equivalent work experience.
  • 1-3 years’ experience with taxonomy development and implementation.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage workflow and prioritize multiple tasks, attention to detail, and complex problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working with standard metadata formats (e.g., MARC, EAD, TEI, VRA Core, METS, MODS, PREMIS, etc.)
  • Understanding of search engine optimization.
  • High degree of comfort and interest in innovation, electronic records, and information technology.
  • Ability to work individually and with a team to meet deadlines.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with coworkers, superiors, and stakeholders.
  • Strong reading and writing skills; must be able to analyze written content for unfamiliar subject areas in order to make recommendations for changes to taxonomy as needed.
  • Demonstrated initiative in investigating new ideas and implementing change.
  • A commitment to strong customer service within and outside the library.
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
