Manager, Access and Commons Services, Brandeis University, Waltham, MA

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Collections, the Manager, Access and Commons Services will envision and deliver superlative, user focused experiences to library users at Brandeis.  These experiences include access and use of resources in all formats; access and use of computing, scanning, and other equipment; management of physical collections for self service access; management and efficient access to stored collections; and provision of information and referral services and basic research assistance. The Manager will provide leadership and coordination for a team of Access and Commons Services staff, student workers, and others who are scheduled at the main library service point and charged with assisting users working in various parts of the library building and from off site. The Manager will participate in planning and strategic decision-making with regard to library policies, operating hours, spaces, services, equipment, navigation, resource management, and staff development.  The Manager will also collect and deliver appropriate service and use data for evidence-based decision making, working with the members of the LTS team.  

Examples of Key Responsibilities:

  • Leads, organizes, oversees, and assesses operations in the Commons areas of the library. Included are the public/staff interface for information assistance, access and use of materials in varied formats and via varied equipment and devices, and building operations that ensure reliability, safety, and productive use of spaces. Provides leadership for an evolving program of front line library services, including design and operation of the main library desk functions; design and evolution of services in the Information Commons; training, scheduling, and oversight of staff assisting users in the Commons; management of physical collections, public and stored; collections related moves and inventories; delivery services; and ensuring tactful and professional interactions with library users.  Identifies, plans, and maintains public and front line staff technology and equipment, working with appropriate user experience and computing professionals. Supervises exempt and non-exempt Access and Commons staff members, including their hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluation. Oversight of a student work force of 40 or more and its budget.
  • Participates in provision of day-to-day Access and Commons Services operations.
  • Participates in programs of Public Services and LTS, such as library instruction, research help, facilities development, and special projects and initiatives.
  • Participates in data collection and analysis, assessment and usability efforts, and other decision support activities.
  • Maintains currency with trends and best practices in academic libraries and service design in access operations and library commons. Participates in service to the profession.

Position Requirements
Required:

  • Masters of Library Science from an ALA accredited program of study
  • At least three years of customer service experience in library front-line services, or in a setting that would provide background for doing so effectively; at least one year of applicable supervisory experience
  • Strong customer service background and ability to articulate a user-focused vision of service
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to interact with users with tact and professionalism
  • Experience with library ILS systems and technologies
  • Understanding of academic library environments, operations, and objectives

Preferred:

  • Two years of post-MLS management experience
  • Experience designing or providing information commons services
  • Project management skills
  • Experience managing access and maintenance of stored collections
  • Familiarity with Ex-Libris systems and software, especially Alma
  • Familiarity with interlibrary loan and reserves practice
