Library Director, Sunderland Public Library, Sunderland, MA

The Town of Sunderland is seeking an energetic, self-directed leader to be responsible for all phases of library operation including collection management, community programming, budget management, personnel management, operations and public relations.

The 9,400 square-foot library building was opened in April 2004. This community library includes separate rooms for children and young adults, as well as a community room and café.

The Sunderland Public Library serves a community of approximately 4,000, with an operating budget of approximately $165,000 and 2.8 FTE.

Goals for the new library director include maintaining the library’s tradition of excellent service and programming, strengthening ties with the community and local schools, and thoughtfully addressing how to maintain the library’s relevance in an increasingly digital society.

Qualifications:

ALA-Accredited MLS or MLIS degree is strongly preferred. Administrative and supervisory experience at a public library is strongly preferred.

Applicants must possess a thorough knowledge of library administration including finance management of all fund types, preparation and monitoring of the annual budget and procurement, personnel administration, grant writing, strategic planning, technology, and public relations as outlined in the job description.

Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with trustees, Friends, library staff, town officials, and the general public. Proven record of effective and creative community programming preferred.

Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of public library functions, including collection management, circulation services, and programming.

Experience with and knowledge of automated library systems.

Considerable knowledge of and ability to use computers, including software to conduct database searches, spreadsheet management, word processing, and cataloging.

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Salary: $40-$43K with generous municipal benefits.
