Temporary Cabot Library Renovation Processing Assistant, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA

Summary:
Access Services supports the Harvard Library mission by delivering a high standard of service; cultivating a welcoming environment that is supportive of academic research and inquiry; stewarding the university collection; and connecting the academic community to the vast array of library resources. We support the teaching and scholarly mission of the University through collaborative partnerships with the community of students, scholars and professionals at Harvard and beyond.
Reporting to the Collection Management and Project Librarian, the processing assistant has responsibility for processing Cabot Library collections in preparation for the Cabot Library Renovation, currently scheduled for 2016.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Pulling materials. The assistant will retrieve materials from the library stacks and place them onto book trucks for processing.
- Materials processing. As trained, and according to ongoing instructions from supervisors, the assistant will process materials for transfer to Harvard Depository or for deaccession, as appropriate; affix a physical sticker and barcode to the material as needed; and wipe clean, envelope or otherwise prepare the item.
- Packing materials. After processing items, the assistant will pack each item into bins or boxes for pick up and delivery to Harvard Depository or another location.
- Other duties. The assistant will perform other tasks as assigned by a supervisor.
Basic qualifications:
- Facility with computers and computer programs is required.
- Experience working in a library, especially in handling, pulling and/or packing library materials
- Experience using electronic library applications, including online database searching within Hollis, is desirable.
Additional Qualifications:
- Ability to communicate questions or problems clearly and in a timely manner to the supervisor.
- Good attendance, punctuality and overall dependability.
- Capacity to absorb training, follow detailed instructions, and produce accurate results within given benchmarks.
- Ability to exercise individual initiative, when required.

- Must be able to lift books and bins or boxes up to 40 pounds and handle and move heavy volumes on a continual basis.
- Ability to stretch, squat, reach, stoop, bend.
- Good close vision, especially, the ability to read call numbers on books in the stacks and on physical books during processing.
