Weekend Reference Librarian, Boston Athenaeum, Boston, MA

The Boston Athenӕum seeks a professional, collegial, and outgoing Weekend Reference Librarian who will oversee reference and circulation services on weekends at an historic membership library. Hours will be Saturdays (9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) and Sundays (noon to 4:00 p.m.). This part-time exempt position reports to the Head of Reader Services.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides general and scholarly reference assistance and offers readers’ advisory in person at the Reference Desk, on the phone, and by email (30%)
  • Provides bibliographic instruction on the use of Athena, the library’s online catalog, as well as all other print reference tools, electronic resources, and the internet on a one-on-one basis as well as in group, classroom settings (20%)
  • Prepares materials to assist in bibliographic instruction (10%)
  • Handles weekend procedures: provides back-up to interns working at the Circulation Desk; charges and discharges books to members; shelves returned volumes; answers the main phone line and directs calls to appropriate person or department, handles gift shop purchases (20%)
  • Interprets the Athenæum, its history, collections, and services to members, guests, and visitors; and provides tours to members (10%)
  • Troubleshoots member requests and problems (including equipment like printers, copiers, etc.) (5%)
  • Performs other duties as assigned (5%)

Qualifications:

  • Masters in Library Science
  • Proficiency in Office products, ILS systems, and databases
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds

Preferred:

  • Experience teaching bibliographic instruction courses
