School Librarian/Media Specialist, Hopedale Memorial Elementary School, Hopedale, MA

Qualifications: Highly qualified candidate with current Massachusetts certification as a school librarian.  Master’s Degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or from a Master’s level program in library and information studies.

Reports to: Directly to the Principal

Supervises: Librarian assistant, and when applicable, library volunteers

Terms of Employment: School Year

Salary: In accordance with Unit A contract

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with state and district policies

Job Goals:

  • to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information
  • to empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, & ethical users of information
  • to instill a love of learning in all students and ensure equitable access to information
  • to collaborate with classroom teachers to design and implement units of instruction & assess student learning
  • to align the School Library Program with the mission, goals and objectives of the school & district

Roles & Responsibilities:

Teacher

  1. Collaborate with classroom teachers as a partner in the instructional process
  2. Collaborates to design, teach & assess learning experiences that incorporate inquiry learning, information literacies in their formats, critical thinking & self-assessment
  3. Promotes a love of reading and lifelong learning
  4. Promotes instructional technology to improve learning
  5. Teaches students to build on prior knowledge to construct new knowledge

Leader

  1. Aligns School Library Program to school, state and national standards
  2. Stays current in professional practice, educational research, & maintains professional memberships
  3. Collects & analyzes data to improve instruction; demonstrates correlations between the School Library Program and student achievement
  4. Administers the School Library Program budget to support programmatic goals
  5. Participates in the hiring, training and evaluation of library staff and volunteers

School Librarian

  1. Fosters a creative, flexible environment so that the school library is an essential part of the learning community
  2. Develops & maintains resources appropriate to the curriculum, the students and instructional strategies of the school community
  3. Establishes procedures for selection, acquisition, circulation, resource sharing of resources in all formats
  4. Evaluates, promotes & uses existing and emerging technologies to support teaching & learning
  5. Promotes the ethical use of information: copyright, fair use and licensing of intellectual property
