Position Function:

Will collaborate with team members to ensure the effective delivery of user services, including reference, instruction, outreach, scholarly communication support and collection management in an information and technology intensive environment. This position reports to the Coordinator of Research Services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Ability to work as an effective, flexible team member in a service-oriented, computer intensive environment; works scheduled hours at a public service desk and on chat, including one evening each week and as a part of a Sunday rotation schedule; provides specialized and general research consultations, instruction sessions and in-person and virtual reference services; provides outreach to undergraduates, graduate students and faculty in the College of Education; supports faculty and student research needs involving open access, data management, institutional repositories and copyright; serves as the Research Services Department’s collection development subject specialist in education-related fields; serves as a Library liaison/subject bibliographer for assigned academic department(s); prepares and maintains research guides for the College of Education; works as a team member of the MSU Libraries’ Campus Outreach initiative; participates in University and library-wide committees as appropriate; maintains a course of personal professional development through active participation in professional associations and/or other professional activities external to the libraries; conducts research/creative activities in accordance with the guidelines for promotion and tenure at the MSU Libraries.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program; strong commitment to reference, scholarly communication, instruction and outreach services.

Preferred Qualifications:

Related master’s degree; K-12 classroom teaching experience; recent reference and/or instruction experience in an academic research library; web authoring and development skills; understanding of scholarly communication issues; experience with copyright as related to education; proficiency with education resources in all formats; knowledge of the research process in education disciplines; experience providing virtual reference; experience with instructional design and developing online tutorials, distance learning and/or library outreach services; understanding of current issues, trends and technologies impacting higher education and academic libraries.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong organizational skills as well as effective interpersonal, collegial and communication/presentation skills (both oral and written); ability to work independently and as a team member, to set and adjust priorities and workflow in a dynamic and changing environment and able to accept new challenges in order to realize departmental and library goals; maintains effective working relationships with colleagues, faculty and staff in a complex and rapidly changing environment; demonstrates continuing commitment to professional development; demonstrates potential for meeting the requirements for promotion and tenure; experience with providing library or course-related instruction.
